Crested geckos drop their tails in an effort to escape from predators and evade them, their tails detach from their bodies, then wiggle around on their own to distract the predators while they run away. They do not regrow their tails once they drop them, so it's important to be gentle when you handle them. Don't grab them by the tail or anything. (Source)
