The development of amniotic eggs has allowed reptiles to move further from the aquatic environment, the development of them allows reptiles to lay their eggs in drier environments. Reptiles have developed scaley skin, and are able to reduce the amount of water loss from sun exposure. These are the two main things that have allowed reptiles to move away from aquatic environments.
