Yes, a 40 gallon reptile tank can work for a hamster as long as it is suited for a hamster and not a reptile. It should have good air flow through there and lots of toys/wheels for your hamster to play on ideally. Hamsters are easy to take care of if you do your due diligence and read about their care needs.
