No, it is not bad to get a baby blue tongue skink to live in a 40 gallon tank, this is because they will eventually grow to be full size, and by then a 40 gallon tank will be big enough for the adult blue tongue skink. This is considered a good decision by many different skink owners, so go ahead and buy a 40 gallon if you haven't already.
