Yes, guppies do need air in order to survive, they need fresh air inside of their water tanks in order to breathe successfully. Air that is of bad quality or an air pump that doesn't produce good air will 100% effect the quality of life of your guppies, it's something to take a look at and take very seriously. (Source)
