You can tell if a ball python is nervous by analyzing their body language, if they are inside of a ball and hissing, that's there way of telling you that they're scared and threatened. You may end up getting bit as well, these are the common signs to be on the lookout for. 

The bites that they give aren't that bad, and are somewhat mild.
