Pet rats for a 4 year old could be a great new addition to your family, they are easy to care for, sociable, docile and inquisitive. A 4 year old would probably enjoy feeding and watching a pet rat. I wouldn't let a young child be alone near a pet rat, I would have some safety measures in place/boundaries so that they don't end up getting hurt or hurting the pet rat.
