Yes, pet rats are safe animals, they won't by any means kill you directly like a bear or lion would, they do however carry some nasty germs that you definitely don't want. Pet rats can carry  rat bite fever, Salmonella, giardia, and Seoul hantavirus all of these diseases you definitely don't want to have. They can be spread through a rats saliva, feces and urine.
