Yes, a crested gecko's tail can fall off any time, for any reason. They will drop their tails when they feel scared, fearful or threatened in any way, even a vacuum could make a crested gecko's tail fall off at any time. It's essential to make sure that crested geckos feel safe and that you aren't scaring them when you go in to hold them or anything like that. You can do this by hand feeding them and minimizing the loud noises around them.
