Most lizards and snakes use the basking light to regulate their internal temperatures. They alternate between basking in the heat and cooling off in the shade. They do this to help them digest foods and remain healthy. This process is part of being an ectotherm, meaning they rely on outside temperatures to maintain their own body temperature.
