The real risk of owning a reptile depends greatly on the type of reptile that you own, if you own say an Iguana you risk getting tail whipped by one or scratched by its claws or even bitten. All three aren't fun and can do some serious damage to you. A bigger risk with owning a reptile deals with salmonella, every reptile has the potential to transfer it to you if you aren't cleanly enough and it can potentially do some harm to you. (Source)

In most instances you'll be fine if you do your due diligence.
